Lecture by Prof. Dr. Daniel Haun, PD (Max Planck Institute Leipzig) and Dr. Claudia Sassenrath (University of Ulm)
Moderation: Prof. Dr. Mario Gollwitzer (LMU)
As much as empathy is on everyone's lips as a demand on politics, society and individuals, the terminology often remains fuzzy. All the more necessary would be a precise (social) scientific classification and also differentiation from other terms such as prosocial behavior. Empathy, for example, refers to all processes by which an individual can empathize with or comprehend the observable states of another individual. Prosocial behavior is defined as behavior that serves the well-being of others. Social psychologist Claudia Sassenrath and developmental psychologist and primatologist Daniel Haun present and contrast the respective state of the art of their fields in this subject area.
The Center for Advanced Studies at LMU provides a forum for scientific exchange and discussion that bridges the divide between the established disciplines. Its activities are designed to promote all forms of collaborative research and to stimulate interdisciplinary communication within the University. In addition, it facilitates the integration of visiting scholars and scientists into the academic life of the University.
